TED Friends

This time last week I was about to take the stage as a TED talk speaker. I had the badge (and the butterflies!) to prove it!

And I also had my friends…blowing up my phone, sending me private messages, emails, and posting their support on Facebook. It was beautiful to behold. I was emotional right before the talk so I went to “airplane mode” an hour before. (I was flying about that high)

And then came my talk. It went SOOOO fast. Keep in mind, I am accustomed to going for 2-3 hours at a time when I get on stage to do flower shows and demonstrations. Also, remember that I am usually surrounded with flowers, with something for my hands to do.

Not on this day. It was me, a rose on my lapel and a story to tell.

And I told it. And I am glad.

When I came off the stage, I turned my phone back on and low and behold I was greeted with all these fantastic messages from people in my village and friends around the world. That was the best part, so I wanted to share it with you…..

Meet Renee Tucci, who became my friend through working at the Philadelphia Flower Show. I don’t remember if we met at the Designers Studio or on the Schaffer Team, but our love of floral brought us together and we have been friends ever since. She’s adorable, talented, and I love her TED talk selfie!

The HOTHOUSE crew (out of Birmingham that I get to go do freelance work for, from time to time) headed by my curly creative soul sister and fellow Design Star Mandy Majerik. They watched and posted! I love these people. LOVE. When Mandy needs an extra set of hands, she sends me a text and say “Duncan, get down here” and I love to go and just work and drool over all her fabulous props and fabulous flowers and general fabulousness. And she has assembled the best design team. They are brilliant. And they take me to eat at fantastic places. Bonus:  I get popsicles from Steel City Pops!

And of course theres the illustrious Bill Schaffer & Kris Kratt, of the Philadelphia Flower Show and IFD (International Floral Distributors Group) trend forecasters, and a whole bunch of other super cool stuff that would take a whole blog post to discuss…anyhow they also posted on Facebook to show their support. I adore them, their wild, ridiculous talent & fearless approach to floral fabulousness. Plus they are hilarious. And wildly creative. And Evie was their flower girl/dog bearer in their wedding. And they are my friends.

The best part of the day was seeing these posts and pictures. The support and enthusiasm of my friends and family are what made the experience so special.

I stated in my talk “…Can flowers change the world? Like the whole world? That’s a pretty tall order. And its a pretty big world. I have limited influence, but I DO have influence. And faith. And flowers. And I’m not afraid to use them. You shouldn’t be either.”
